Custom Farmhouse/Rustic diy EAT sign décor

I have seen EAT signs all over at stores and in magazine photos of kitchen and dining rooms. I knew I wanted one to put up on my dining room wall, I just couldn’t find the right colors that I wanted. When I saw a three pack of cutting boards at Amazon, I knew I wanted to use them to hang my letters on and thought of how easy it would be to make it with my own colors. So now, I am able to show you how easy it is to make your own Custom Farmhouse/Rustic diy EAT sign décor.

This is the sign I made for my wall. I had planned on using my Cricut for the letters, but I found some wooden letters on Amazon that came with the spoon and fork and decided to buy them to make this.

Notice my cutting boards look like they are different shades of stain? Take this tip from me, do NOT and I repeat, do NOT use two different bottles of stain or paint on any of your projects. I stained one of the cutting boards with what was left in a bottle of Waverly antique wax and used another bottle on the other two cutting boards and as you can see, there was a slight difference in the colors. You really don’t notice it on my wall with the lighting in my house. But learn from my mistake and if one of your bottles is almost empty, just go ahead and open your new bottle if you know you won’t have enough for your project.

Now let’s get on with how easy this project was to make.

What I love about making this yourself, is you can customize the colors to match your house and decorating style. You could use different size cutting boards, paint instead of stain. How about using some sandpaper to distress it to make it look more along the lines of farmhouse and/or rustic?

I played around on Canva with the colors because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to paint the cutting boards and the letters different colors, or use stain or what. So I decided to go with good old stain on the cutting boards. Then I painted the EAT letters the colors I use in my dining room décor.

Now you just stain, paint and then glue the letters to the cutting boards. I used the Waverly antique wax for the stain and Anita’s craft paint in Deep denim for the bright blue T and folkArt enamels paint in Aqua for the E. I left the A in the white that the EAT letters came in.

I think I ended up doing 2 coats of the Waverly on the cutting boards (in spots a few more coats trying to get the colors the same). And then 2 coats of paint on the E and T. Then adding a little twine to the handles of the cutting boards and utensils just added a nice touch to the whole ensemble.

And then, all done!

(Notice in the photo below that the coloring doesn’t look as bad as it does in the very first and very last picture in this post). I swear the lighting in my house is crazy sometimes.

Overall I am really happy with how it turned out. And it was so easy and less than $20 dollars to make. And Dollar Tree now sells wooden cutting boards! I saw two different sizes in my store a few weeks ago and they were just getting them in. So they might even carry more than two sizes.

I do think when I get my husband to hang it on the wall, I’m going to have him hang them butted up against each other, instead of leaving a slight gap like the above picture.
