Some Recommended and Needed Equipment
A medium size bowl. I love using batter bowls like these. Makes it so much easier to pour the leftovers into a jar or baggie.
Spatula or large spoon so stir. I use these silicone spatulas. They make it easy to scrape the sides of the bowls so all your ingredients are mixed properly. And, they are so easy to clean.
Notes and Tips before we begin
- Taste your sauce and add any additional seasonings before putting in on your pizza.
- Use fresh herbs if you have them! Fresh basil could be mixed in the sauce or placed on top of your pizza.

- If you like your sauce with a sweetness, you can add up to a teaspoon sugar.

- If you don’t have tomato sauce, a jar of canned tomatoes (diced or whole tomatoes) can be used along with the tomato paste. Just use a food processor or blender to blend the tomatoes

Frequently Asked Questions about Homemade Pizza Sauce
Can I just use spaghetti sauce or marinara sauce on pizza?
- You could, but you really don’t want to. Pizza sauce is a thicker consistency than pasta sauce and your pizza crust would end up soggy.
Do I have to heat up or cook the pizza sauce before using it?
- No. The tomato paste and tomato sauce is already cooked. Then the sauce is heated up when you cook your pizza!
Can I freeze this homemade version?
- Yes, make a large batch and freeze for later! This quick sauce will thaw overnight in the fridge or in a bowl of hot water.
Can you use fresh tomatoes?
- Yes! Just blanch to remove the skins, then use a food mill to remove seeds. Pulse in a food processor and add your tomato paste. Plum tomatoes, such as Roma Tomatoes are a good choice, but your favorite tomatoes will work. Depending on how watery your tomatoes are, you may need more tomato paste to get a thick sauce.
